Mullen Pulse Test Stand

Commonly used in the paper and packaging industry, Mullen Pulse Test Stand measures the pressure required to rupture a sheet of paperboard. It helps assess the strength and durability of packaging materials.

Ball Pulse Test Stand

In this method, a metal ball is pressed against a material until it bursts. It's often used for evaluating the burst strength of nonwoven materials and textiles.

Why applying Pulse Test Stand?

In comparison to well testing, Pulse Test Stand employs a number of pulses rather than a single one. Therefore, it requires more time. However, there are two important advantages. First, the deployment is simple. A regular pump must be switched at well-defined moments while rates and pressures are monitored. This can all be done with standard equipment. Second, harmonic pulse tests can be performed while other operations are ongoing. This saves expensive non-productive time. Even more important, it facilitates the use of the technique as a monitoring tool during operations. As an example, the effect of stimulation can be assessed in real time by superposition of a pulse on top of an injections schedule. This way, the injectivity during different background injection rates can be followed.

How to conduct Pulse Test Stand?

The first operational decision, prior to the application of Pulse Test Stand, is the determination of the pulse durations, i.e. the fundamental period. This parameter depends critically on the expected reservoir properties and on the pulse test configuration. Expected values for the parameters can be used with the theoretical relationships to determine for what values reasonable signals can be expected. This is also related to the choice whether monitoring is employed in the pulser well only or also in an observer well.

The number of pulses must be sufficient to obtain the frequency information. Usually, 7 to 10 pulses suffice.

To be able to obtain a maximum amount of useable frequencies, high-quality data are required. The least critical component of the data is the : it should be in the order of 5 to 10%. More important are timing parameters. or higher is preferred. Secondly, the moment of switching between rates should be controlled to within 2 or 3 times this sampling rate. Otherwise, higher frequencies will not appear clear enough in the frequency spectrum. Finally, the clocks for sampling the rates and the pressures should be synchronized to the same precision.

How the Pulse Test Bench Works

Pulse Test Stand is a testing method used to evaluate the performance and durability of materials, components or systems under repeated stress or impact loading. Its working principle is based on simulating the rapidly changing pressure conditions that may be encountered in actual applications to examine the response and reliability of the target object under these conditions.

During Pulse Test Stand, a pneumatic or hydraulically driven device is typically used to generate pressure pulses. These pressure pulses can be sinusoidal, square, sawtooth or other more complex waveforms, depending on the specific testing requirements and standards. The test equipment generates a series of pressure pulses, the duration, amplitude and frequency of each pulse can be adjusted as needed.

Key parameters for Pulse Test Stand include the peak pressure of the pulse, pulse width (i.e. the time it takes for the pressure to rise and fall), pulse repetition frequency and the total length of the test cycle. By varying these parameters, different operating conditions and stress levels can be simulated.

During testing, sensors and data acquisition systems are used to monitor the pressure exerted on the test sample and how the sample responds. These data can be used to calculate the dynamic properties of the specimen, such as fatigue life, stress relaxation, creep or fracture toughness. For some applications, temperature, vibration, and other environmental factors may also be monitored to obtain more comprehensive test results.

Pulse Test Stand is critical to ensure that the product can withstand the pressure fluctuations that may be encountered in actual use. It is widely used in aerospace, automotive, petrochemical, electronics and other engineering fields to verify the design and manufacturing quality of materials and components. Through Pulse Test Stand, engineers can optimize product designs, prevent potential failure modes, and improve product reliability and safety.
